Formolo: "We were very close to making everything perfect"

Davide Formolo (Bora-Hansgrohe), 2nd of the 2019 Liège-Bastogne-Liège: “The last two years I’ve been really close to the win in Liège. Today I just missed a few pedal strokes to stay with Jakob. He was the strongest today and I think I was really close to him. I was feeling really bad in first three hours with the cold weather. Maybe it was the longest three hours of my life. And then things got better and I was also feeling better. It’s a really hard race even with this new route. Everyone was saying it was easier but if you go through details the last climb is actually longer and harder than Saint Nicolas and then it’s all downhill until the finish line. We had a very strong team with Max (Schachmann), me, also Koni (Patrick Konrad), and Jay (McCarthy) for a sprint. So the question is always how to play when you have so many cards. We were very close to making everything perfect, with Max dominating the sprint in the first group, and with me just missing a few metres to stay with Jakob and then challenge him for the victory.”
